Fern
Hill has a reputation as one of the leading privately
owned Hotels in South Africa. Established restaurateurs
and hoteliers, Gion and Karen Poltera, will ensure your
stay is an unforgettable one.
Fern
Hill Hotel and Conference Centre is a landmark in the
Kwazulu Natal Midlands. Situated just off the N3 highway
and opposite the Midmar Dam and Nature Reserve, it enjoys
a significant history.
Built
in 1851, as a trading post by the Swann family, it became
a trading post and boarding house in 1888 for the Trekkers
that stopped off, before descending the treacherous Umngeni
Gorge. Over many years it became a popular holiday resort,
until the early 1960's, after which it was left to go
to rack and ruin.
Gion
and Karen Poltera bought the property in October 1989
and painstakingly reconstructed the dilapidated buildings
that remained and within eight months were able to re-open,
in May 1990. What started off as a small hotel, with only
Six bedrooms, a small bar, restaurant and conference room,
has developed to great proportions. Today it boasts Forty-Two
bedrooms, all en-suite and a host of public rooms. The
accommodation offers family suites, cottages and executive
rooms.
Enjoy
one these beautifully appointed rooms. Some of which have
a Jacuzzi bath, some four-poster beds and some king-size.
All rooms are equipped with a TV, remote control, bathroom/shower-en-suite,
tea/coffee making facilities and guest amenities. All
rooms are carpeted and tiled.
The
'Mandela Suite' was developed for the President himself
and enjoys a sumptuous lounge. It also has two adjoining
rooms, with bathroom/shower en-suite, plus the suite can
be served from a demonstration kitchen, that is built
adjacent to it.
It
has Four Conference rooms, Two restaurants, Two bars and
a fully accredited Training College, for students wishing
to develop their skills in the Industry.
The
hotel is set in Twenty-Five acres of park like grounds,
with water features, a Gazebo, Swimming Pool, Tennis Court,
Volley Ball Court and Braai/Barbeque Area
