Kafunta Safari operates Kafunta River Lodge, a classical Safari Lodge, and Island Bush Camp a small, personalized camp set at the banks of the Luangwa river, offering a real bush experience. For the more adventurous wildlife enthusiast we offer safaris that cover the whole of the Luangwa valley.

Kafunta River Lodge
Kafunta River Lodge is set in the riverside forest on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the South Luangwa National Park. Kafunta’s accommodation is of the highest standard in the valley. This classical Safari Lodge offers its clients all the comforts, while being situated in the unspoilt wilderness. Kafunta consistently ensures high standards of personalized service and the attention to the finest of details. The 8 private chalets are built on raised wooden platforms and have thatched roofs. Mahogany floors and walls add natural beauty to the luxurious interiors.

The 2 luxury suits feature an upstairs viewing verandah, a downstairs balcony and a luxurious bathroom with double sinks, two showers and a free-standing bath.

Kafunta River Lodge specializes in game drives, which are accompanied by its outstanding team of safari guides. The early morning hours are ideal for a game drive or alternatively a walking safari can be arranged. During your afternoon game drive we stop for sundowners while experiencing the magnificent African sunset. You continue with the drive in the dark which allows you to spot nocturnal animals.
Central to the lodge is the spacious bar and dining area. Built around a semi-evergreen wild mango tree and thatched in the traditional style, it offers superb panoramic views over the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park. Great game viewing and bird watching from the lodge is guaranteed.

Adjacent to the Bar is our pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa valley. This unique hot tub is fed from a source on Kafunta’s grounds, offering a constant temperature of 38 degrees. Here you can enjoy pure relaxation while at the same being presented with magnificent views over the flood plains and the Luangwa river.

Kafunta River Lodge has its own pontoon 5 minutes from the Lodge, the adventurous crossing takes you into the more remote areas of the Park - an alternative to the main gate 10 km (game driving) north of the Lodge.

Kafunta River Lodge is open 12 months of the year.

New Luxury Chalets at Kafunta
Kafunta River Lodge has 2 new luxury suites, set alongside the chalets on the bank of the Luangwa River overlooking the floodplains. The suites each have an up-stairs viewing platform, furnished with a sitting area, bar-fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Each suite has a luxurious bathroom with double basin and double shower and free standing bath. The spacious rooms offer great views all round and are perfect for anyone looking for a special treat or that little bit of extra luxury in the bush. The special treat package includes a bush-breakfast and private dinner.



Island Bush Camp
This small, personalized camp lies under a grove of Mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa River. The Island Bush Camp offers rustic accommodation in grass/reed huts build on stilts that ensure safety from wild animals and provide an unlimited view of the Luangwa River. The 5 chalets are equipped with the modern comforts of hot showers and running water. The Island Bush Camp lies a 2 hours drive south of Kafunta River Lodge in a very remote game-rich area of the southern section of the Park. The Island Bush Camp emphasizes on exclusive walking safaris, which are accompanied by a safari guide as well as a National Park ranger, alternatively game drives can be arranged. This small, personalized camp lies under a grove of Mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa River. The Island Bush Camp offers rustic accommodation in grass/reed huts, with the modern comforts of hot showers and running water. Each chalet has a private verandah overlooking the Luangwa River.

The Island Bush Camp is 2 hours drive south of Kafunta River Lodge in a very remote game-rich area of the southern section of the Park. In this complete solitude far away from other operators we offer exclusive walking safaris.

Island Bush Camp is seasonal and is open from 20 May to 1 November.
