Kuname River Lodge, just four hours by road from Johannesburg, has been completely revamped and refurbished but maintains its exclusivity. Close to the Kruger National Park's Orpen Gate and nestled in 9,000 ha of the unspoiled Karongwe Game Reserve, Kuname is home to the big five, many other indigenous game species and is a bird watcher's delight.
The premium 5 star-graded affordable safari facility, built on the banks of the Kuvjename river, has five luxurious chalets and two stylish family cottages, nestled in riverine forest overlooking the majestic Drakensberg escarpment.
The chalets are air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms with an outdoor shower and bath. The Premier Suite’s outdoor bathroom is situated in a secluded romantic garden, and is truly magical - the perfect spot to soak in a candlelit bath beneath a canopy of stars and reflect on the day's experiences. The chalets each have their own private deck where guests can enjoy panoramic views and take pleasure in the tranquility of nature. The chalets are decorated in an elegant African style, with each item of artwork having its own story.
The main lodge houses an elegant lounge area and a well-stocked library and leads onto an elevated wooden deck built high amongst the surrounding riverine vegetation. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or a cup of freshly brewed coffee while listening to the song of the African bush.
A new, gorgeous rock pool offers the ideal venue to relax and invigorate in cool sparkling waters.
Kuname's gourmet chef, lured from one of South Africa's top restaurants, ensures every meal is an unforgettable occasion. Here you can inhale the earthy scents of the African bush while you savour fine wines in the boma area or at an elegant bush dinner.
Game Drives at Kuname are about getting immersed in the African bush. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are conducted by experienced rangers in open game drive vehicles. Our rangers and trackers have an intimate knowledge of the environment and guests are able to get close to the big five and a host of other animals, including a variety of antelope, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. This together with an incredible bird life and centuries-old trees ensures that guests become participants, rather than just spectators.
Walking safaris at Kuname are a chance to step into a world few get the opportunity to experience. It is a journey into nature, where one can learn about medicinal plants, lesser-known flora and fauna and local bush-lore, passed down from generation to generation by the area’s indigenous people.
Golfing enthusiasts can test their skills on the famous Hans Merensky Golf Course which is approximately one hours drive from Kuname River Lodge.
For those who enjoy pursuits of a more cultural or scenic flavour there are many attractions within close proximity to the lodge. Visit the historical gold-mining village of Pilgrims Rest or marvel at the majesty of the Blyde River Canyon. Take in a wildlife experience at the Kapama Cheetah Breeding Project and the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre or take a trip to the Modjadji Cycad forest, home of the legendary African Rain Queen.
“At Kuname we are driven by passion. Passion for the land, passion for the animals and plants, passion for service and passion for the community in which we live. Our guiding principle is responsible tourism. Our mission is not only to conserve the ecosystem and preserve endangered animals but, just as important, to conserve endangered space,” says lodge manager, and conservationist, Pierre Gallagher.
