Opened in 1888, the
Swartberg Pass is one of the most scenic mountain passes in South
Africa. Tucked away between the Outeniqua and the Swartberg mountains
lies Oudtshoorn and the spectacular chambers of the Cango Caves, with
picturesque names such as Cleopatra's Needle, Organ Pipes, Lot's Wife
and the appropriately named Lumbago Tunnel.
Situated virtually in
the centre of town, the 4-storey Oudtshoorn Hotel & Resort has 120
guest rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning, remote control
television (including M-Net), radio, telephone, hairdryer and tea /
coffee making facilities. The hotel offers a tennis court, miniature
golf and outside braai / barbecue facilities.
The Garden Grill & Buffet Restaurant offers a wide
selection of international and traditional cuisine and ostrich
specialities. The Restaurant leads onto the Pool Terrace, where lunch
and dinner can be enjoyed outdoors. The cosy Residents Bar is the ideal
place to round off an exciting day.
The Oudtshoorn Hotel
& Resort is also the perfect Conference venue. The "Van Rheede"
Conference room can take up to 100 delegates and is equipped with a
range of state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment.
Other 'must see' attractions are Oudtshoorn's "feather
palaces" (volstruispaleise), ostrich show-farms, the Cango Wildlife
Ranch (home to a successful cheetah - breeding programme) and the
famous Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, held in March / April, which
has become one of South Africa's biggest events and celebration of
South African Arts and Culture.
