Country-style country retreat under thatch with country
cottage decor set in 100 acres of wooded countryside in
the Drakensberg foothills. Built of stone in 1850 as a coach
house and also used during the Boer war (1900) as barracks
for British troops, one is reminded of a world that has
slipped by.
Set
in a picturesque English country garden with a lake and
park-like surroundings what could be more peaceful than
just sitting and watching the ever-changing view of the
mountains. Enjoy bird watching, fishing or cooling off
in the crystal clear pool after a day’s outing.
 The
interiors of Sandford’s main building are filled
with old furniture and memorabilia. There is an attractively
furnished lounge where there are many interesting books
to browse through and television available. In The residents
exclusive pub (renown as the best and cosiest in the berg)
sample the locally brewed draught beer. Dinner is enjoyed
in candlelit ambiance, attentive service and memorable
cuisine prepared with care so as to seduce both the eye
and taste buds. An extensive choice of South Africa’s
best wines is on hand. A host of recreational facilities
are on offer, such as swimming, croquet, volleyball, badminton,
snooker, darts, and walks on the property. There are over
one hundred and eighty species of birds to spot as well
as canoeing and Florida Bass in the lake.
 Sandford
is situated in the foothills of the premier tourist attraction
in South Africa, namely the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park,
a World Heritage Site, consisting of formidable mountain
ranges with overwhelming scenic beauty; fauna & flora
and San rock paintings. Close to the famous ‘Amphitheatre‘
and Royal National Park, where spectacular views, hiking,
horse riding, birding & trout fishing can be enjoyed.
Close by is the Spioenkop game reserve, where because
of its unique size good game viewing is possible all year
round. Next to the game reserve is the well-known battlefield
of Spioenkop and a little further on the historic siege
of Ladysmith.
The
26 traditional rooms are tastefully decorated and designed
for your comfort and leisure ensuring you have a sanctuary
to retire to for those quiet times. All rooms have en-suite
bathrooms with upcountry cottage décor; all under
thatch – being warm in winter and cool in summer.
Our 24 brand new executive bedrooms, which means we have
a total of 50 bedrooms, all have spacious bedroom areas,
tea/coffee making facilities, modern bathrooms with separate
bath and shower, private patios with chairs and table
and uninterrupted Mountain Views.

three and a half hours from Johannesburg and two and a
